Stewart’s Geotechnical Engineering & Construction Services practice is composed of three primary services: Geotechnical Engineering, Special Inspections, and Construction Materials Testing. Our interdisciplinary approach brings a unique set of talent and experience to our work. The ability to have direct access to our structural engineers, while on-site, allows us to keep the project moving instead of waiting for return calls and making return trips. Our collaborative mindset on how to best serve the client, sets Stewart apart from our competition.
Stewart performs subsurface explorations, specialized field and laboratory testing, and engineering analyses to provide design recommendations and construction guidance. This service helps prepare the owner, design team, and contractor for the subsurface conditions that will have a direct impact on the project design documents and construction budget.
When North Carolina adopted the International Building Code (IBC) in 2002, Stewart established a department solely dedicated to providing Special Inspections (SI) referenced in Chapter 17 of the Code. Because of Stewart’s expertise in the field, the firm was asked by the State Construction Office (SCO) to serve on the task force to develop the first special inspections guidelines for the state. Stewart’s SI program is specifically designed to help meet those mandates and thereby enhance efforts to alleviate structural failures resulting from improper construction. We pride ourselves on ensuring all our structural inspectors are thoroughly trained and properly certified by the International Code Council (ICC) and/or other governing body.
Rounding out Stewart’s Geotechnical Engineering & Construction Services practice, our Construction Materials Testing (CMT) personnel are well-trained and experienced in many different types of construction from multi-story structures to bridges and roadways. Our field staff also possess the appropriate certifications for the task at hand, including CWI, PTI, ACI, NCDOT and ICC.
Stewart has two CMT laboratories, in Raleigh and Charlotte, where we perform testing on soil, aggregate, concrete, grout, mortar, asphalt, sprayed fire-resistive material and other construction materials. Our laboratories are routinely audited by the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials’ (AASHTO) re:source (formerly AMRL) and Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL) inspectors and maintain AASHTO R-18 and NCDOT Tier I certifications.
