This project entailed the architectural renovation of the existing 1960s Brown Building and redesigning the surrounding context of the site to provide stronger pedestrian and vehicular circulation to the WCU campus. Our landscape architecture and civil engineering team members worked collaboratively to provide a plan that ensures the intended programming communicates with the functional grading, storm drainage, utility design, and landscaping. Two main exterior gathering spaces were designed on opposite sides of the building to maximize social interactions among students and provide outdoor study and dining opportunities. By utilizing the existing topography of the site, an overlook was also created, providing views onto the plazas below. ADA access to the building from adjacent parking areas and major pathways was evaluated as part of the circulation to ensure full access to the building. This project was certified LEED Gold.
