Little Sugar Creek Stream Restoration and Greenway

This project involved water quality improvements for a segment of the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, which connects Park Road Shopping Center through existing neighborhoods to Freedom Park. The greenway is a 12-foot-wide asphalt trail with gravel shoulders that meanders through created wetlands and forebays. Benches at several points give users a chance to rest or just relax. Native stream restoration plantings combined with existing trees and new plant materials give users the feeling of being away from it all, even though they are minutes away from downtown Charlotte. Education signage incorporated along the segment explains the stream restoration process and water quality management. The project was dedicated as a segment of the Carolina Thread Trail. It won a Tree Appreciation Award from Charlotte Tree Advisory Commission in 2006 and a Merit Award from the North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (NCASLA) in 2008.
