Quintiles, a global pharmaceutical services company, relocated its new corporate headquarters to the Imperial Tower – a highly visible location at the intersections of Interstate 40 and Page Road in the prestigious Research Triangle Park. The project, which was developed by Tri Properties, includes a 11-story office tower that covers 252,000 square feet and houses approximately 1,000 employees. The adjacent parking deck provides nearly 1,000 parking spaces, and the upper level of the deck supports a landscaped plaza and emergency vehicle access.
Stewart acted as the functional parking designer as well as the structural engineer for the deck. Additionally, Stewart developed the structural design for a complex stairway system in the building’s lobby. The structural system for the office tower is composite steel with a braced frame lateral system and caisson foundations. The parking deck is precast concrete.
Creating an efficient structural system was a major contributor in making this project viable. Stewart also successfully integrated the functional parking design into this challenging site.
