The Details

This new Police Headquarters Complex combines both the former Durham Police Department and the Durham Emergency Communication Center into a central, modern location. A two-story atrium welcomes the community into the new 125,000-square-foot Police Headquarters facility which includes the 911 Emergency Call Center, Forensic Services Unit, Criminal Investigations Division, Special Operations Division, and the Crime Analysis Unit. The headquarters provides ample staff offices, meeting rooms, K9 facilities, and training areas specific to police work. The 911 Emergency Call Center (PSAP – Public Safety Answering Point) is a key component of this building. The headquarters was designed to accommodate projected staffing needs which includes 466 police staff and 100 emergency operations staff. Securing staff safety was a priority, so bullet- and hurricane-resistant glass and secure locations for staff-only entry were incorporated into the facility.

The complex includes a 433-car parking deck and a 57-space parking lot, that allow for future development to wrap the structure with retail spaces.

Stewart performed Structural Engineering services for this project.

This project has been awarded a Golden Leaf award for Large Development from the Durham Appearance Commission, and an Eagle Award from ABC Carolina for Excellence in Construction.
