Stewart congratulates Gallun Snow Associates and BSA LifeStructures on their beautiful and award-winning work on the UCHealth Steadman Hawkins Clinic and CU Sports Medicine in Englewood, Colorado. The project was recently recognized by the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the International Interior Design Association with a BEST “Brilliantly Executed Spaces and Thinking” award in the GIVE category, encompassing healthcare, medical office buildings, and senior living spaces.
Stewart provided structural engineering for the facility, which features a two-story indoor rehabilitation center, surgery suites, offices, and a striking 90-foot clear span curved roof. The voluminous two-story workout space features floor-to-ceiling glass walls, with large garage-door sized panels that can be pulled up to allow a true indoor-outdoor space for rehabilitative exercises. Designed without columns to avoid disruption, the facility has maximum flexibility, with active and passive rehab areas differentiated by the materials chosen by the design team. The result is a light and airy space punctuated with the look of natural materials and brightly colored exercise equipment.
Structural challenges included the curved roof, large open spaces, point-supported glass, vibration requirements for the surgery room, and the presence of expansive soils with caissons. Stewart’s experienced engineering team addressed these requirements, so the new facility could be completed as planned this summer, giving users an inspiring, and now award-winning place to get back in the game.
